.jpg)
This town is the region's capital, known particularly for its Budvar/Budweiser beer, which tastes best in the old, from 16th century Masne kramy (Meat Shops). The town was founded in 1265 as a fortified royal town. It contains a number of places of interest, among them the main square lined by arcades (the largest one in Europe), the town hall, Samson's fountain, and a technical curiosity: the first horse-drawn railway in Europe which was built between 1825 and 1831 and connected Ceske Budejovice with Linz.
