Warsaw

The capital of Poland does not have a reputation for beauty, but there are several wonderful parks and buildings nonetheless, and some fine museums. The Old Town was completely rebuilt after World War II. The most famous sites are the Royal Castle, the Jewish Historical Institute and landmarks such as the Ghetto Wall and Ghetto Heroes Monument, the undamaged Wilanów Palace. Much of the city's history can be explained by its location on the main east-west trade route from Germany to Russia - it has been attacked or overrun numerous times throughout the centuries, most recently by the Soviet Union.
